In resourceful orphan Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield, an Oliver Twist-like charmer), Martin Scorsese finds the perfect vessel
for his silver-screen passion: this is a movie about movies (fittingly, the 3-D effects are spectacular). After his clockmaker
father (Jude Law) perishes in a museum fire, Hugo goes to live with his Uncle Claude (Ray Winstone), a drunkard who maintains
the clocks at a Paris train station. When Claude disappears, Hugo carries on his work and fends for himself by stealing food
from area merchants. In his free time, he attempts to repair an automaton his father rescued from the museum, while trying
to evade the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen), a World War I veteran with no sympathy for lawbreakers. When Georges (Ben
Kingsley), a toymaker, catches Hugo stealing parts for his mechanical man, he recruits him as an assistant to repay his debt.
If Georges is guarded, his open-hearted ward, Isabelle (Chloë Moretz), introduces Hugo to a kindly bookseller (Christopher
Lee), who directs them to a motion-picture museum, where they meet film scholar René (Boardwalk Empire's Michael Stuhlbarg).
In helping unlock the secret of the automaton, they learn about the roots of cinema, starting with the Lumière brothers, and
give a forgotten movie pioneer his due, thus illustrating the importance of film preservation, a cause to which the director
has dedicated his life. If Scorsese's adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret isn't his most autobiographical work, it

hit to a certifiable franchise. The leap for any story making the move from book to big screen, however, is always more perilous.
In the case of The Da Vinci Code, the plot is concocted of such a preposterous formula of elements that you wouldnt envy screenwriter
Akiva Goldsman, the man tasked with making this story filmable. The script follows Dan Browns book as closely as possible
while incorporating a few needed changes, including a better ending. And if youre like most of the world, by now youve read
the book and know how it goes: while lecturing in Paris, noted Harvard Professor of Symbology Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is
summoned to the Louvre by French police to help decipher a bizarre series of clues left at the scene of the murder of the
chief curator. Enter Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), gifted cryptologist. Neveu and Langdon team up to solve the mystery, and
from there the story is propelled across Europe, ballooning into a modern-day mini-quest for the Holy Grail, where secret
societies are discovered, codes are broken, and murderous albino monks are thwarted oh, and alternative theories about the
life of Christ and the beginnings of Christianity are presented too, of course. Its not the typical formula for a stock Hollywood
thriller. In fact, taken solely as a mystery, the movie almost works--despite some gaping holes--mostly just because it keeps
moving. Browns greatest trick was to have the entire story take place in one day, so the action is forced to keep moving,
despite some necessary pauses for exposition. As a screen couple, Hanks and Tautou are just fine together but not exactly
memorable; meanwhile Sir Ian McKellens scenery-chewing as pivotal character Sir Leigh Teabing is just what the film needed
to keep it from taking itself too seriously. The whole thing is like a good roller-coaster ride: try not to think too much
about it--just sit back and enjoy the trip. --Daniel Vancini
In 2013, human cities come under attack by the Kaijus, colossal beasts who come to Earth through a portal on the Pacific Ocean
floor called the Breach. To combat them the Pacific Rim nations build the Jaegers, equally colossal robotic war machines.
Each Jaeger is piloted by two people whose brains are linked (called "drifting") to share the mental load of operating
the machine. The Jaegers are initially effective, but many are destroyed as the Kaijus grow more powerful and their attacks
more frequent. In 2025, the governments deem the Jaeger program ineffective and discontinue it in favor of building massive
coastal walls. The four remaining Jaegers are redeployed to Hong Kong to defend the coast until the wall is completed. Jaeger
commander Stacker Pentecost devises a plan to end the threat permanently by destroying the portal with a nuclear bomb.
Pentecost recruits retired Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket to pilot Gipsy Danger, the Jaeger he and his brother Yancy once
operated together. During a mission in 2020, Yancy was killed by a Kaiju while still mentally linked to his brother. Raleigh
travels to Hong Kong with Pentecost and begins the process of finding a new co-pilot. Raleigh selects Mako Mori, the director
of the Jaeger refurbishment project and Pentecost's adopted daughter. Pentecost reluctantly allows Mako to participate in
a test run with Raleigh. During the test, Mako loses control and nearly discharges Gipsy Danger's cannon in the hangar. Pentecost
deems her unfit for combat and grounds the pair. When two Kaijus attack Hong Kong, destroying two Jaegers and disabling a
third, Pentecost is forced to allow them to pilot Gipsy Danger. The Kaijus are defeated.
Meanwhile, scientist Newton Geiszler creates a device that allows him to drift with a Kaiju brain. He discovers that the
Kaijus are not wild beasts, but cloned living weapons that share a hive mind and fight at the behest of a race of alien colonists
who wish to invade Earth. Pentecost demands that Geiszler repeat the experiment on a different Kaiju brain and sends him to
Hannibal Chau, a criminal who sells Kaiju body parts on the black market. Geiszler commissions Chau to recover an intact brain.
Chau's men investigate one of the fallen Kaijus and are attacked by its unborn offspring, which devours Chau before dying.
Geiszler links with its brain and learns that the ocean portal only opens for Kaiju DNA, meaning the bombing mission will
fail.
The two remaining Jaegers commence the plan to bomb the portal. Pentecost is forced to pilot Striker Eureka, the other
remaining Jaeger, after one of its pilots is injured; Raleigh and Mako pilot Gipsy Danger. Arriving at the portal, they are
ambushed by three Kaijus, including the largest ever encountered. A violent battle ensues, crippling Gipsy Danger and rendering
Striker Eureka unable to deliver the bomb. Geiszler warns the two Jaegers that they must take a Kaiju into the portal with
them for the bombing to work, and Pentecost decides to detonate his bomb immediately to clear a path to the portal for Raleigh
and Mako. Since Gipsy Danger has a nuclear reactor core they can use it to destroy the portal. Pentecost detonates his bomb,
destroying one of the Kaiju and his Jaeger and injures the largest Kaiju. Gipsy Danger kills the third Kaiju and the largest
Kaiju and uses its body to open the portal. Once inside, Raleigh ejects Mako's escape pod and sets the Jaeger to self-destruct.
The Jaeger erupts on the other side of the portal, destroying the invading aliens and the portal. Raleigh is able to jettison
his escape pod and travel back before the portal collapses. Mako and Raleigh's escape pods surface safely in the Pacific,
and the duo embrace as rescue helicopters arrive.
The Clone Wars takes place between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi continue their journey across the galaxy amongst the Clone Wars, meeting
up with familiar villains, such as Count Dooku, General Grievous and Asajj Ventress. The Grand Army of the Republic, led by
Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Ke Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the 2008 CGI-animated theatrical film that serves as the kick-off
to the weekly animated Clone Wars TV series. The concept came about way back in 1977's original Star Warsfilm, when Leia says
in her message to Obi-Wan Kenobi "Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars." Initially a simple offhand
reference that would reveal Luke's past, the phrase captured fans' attentions for years, until Episode II: Attack of the Clones
revealed just how the Clone Wars figured into the battle between Republic and Empire. The 2008 movie is full of familiar characters--Anakin
Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Count Dooku--and a new one: Ahsoka Tano, a young girl who has been made Anakin's Padawan.
Together, the two headstrong youths embark on a mission to rescue Jabba the Hutt's kidnapped child, battling each other as
much as they battle the Separatist forces. There are some kind-of-cool sequences, including duels with Dooku and his assassin,
Asajj Ventress, and it's interesting to see some new corners of the Star Wars universe, such as the seamy underbelly of Coruscant.
But Ahsoka and her penchant for nicknames that are too cute to stomach seem aimed only at tween-age audiences, and for all
that goes on in the movie, nothing really happens in the end. The 2003 animatedClone Wars microseries, which had the advantage
of being directly tied into the live-action film series, had much more emotional bite. At least some familiar voices return:
Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO, and still the only actor in every movie), Christopher Lee (Dooku).
Other voices include Matt Lanter (Anakin), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), and James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan). But even the traditional
opening crawl has been replaced by a narration more suited for Starship Troopers. Veteran Star Wars fans will probably want
to see The Clone Wars--once--but it won't take them long to discover that this Star Warsisn't their Star Wars any more. --David

Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is a teenager living in a trailer park with his mother (Barbara Bosson) and little brother, Louis
(Chris Hebert). Alex's main leisure activity is playing Starfighter, an arcade game where the player defends "the Frontier"
from "Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada" in a space battle. Eventually he becomes the game's highest-scoring player. A short
time later, he is approached by the game's inventor, Centauri (Robert Preston) who invites him to take a ride. Alex does so,
discovering the car is actually a spacecraft. It turns out Centauri is a disguised alien who takes him to the faraway planet
Rylos. So his family and girlfriend, Maggie Gordon (Catherine Mary Stewart), don't notice his absence, an android duplicate
named Beta is left to take his place.
Upon his arrival, Alex discovers that the characters and ships in the Starfighter arcade game represent an actual conflict
between the Rylan Star League and the Ko-Dan Empire; the latter is led by Xur (Norman Snow), a traitor to whom the Ko-Dan
Emperor has promised control of Rylos itself. The game was designed as a test to find those "with the gift"; Alex
is expected to pilot an actual Starfighter spacecraft called the Gunstar. He also discovers that the Frontier is an array
of satellites creating a force-field that protects Rylos and its surrounding planets from invasion. Xur has given the Ko-Dan
the means to breach it.
The series is set thousands of years in the future, and revolves around the Systems Commonwealth, a constitutional monarchy
based in a distant star system called Tarn-Vedra. Humankind is a part of The Commonwealth, having been discovered by its members
thousands of years prior. The Commonwealth is based in three galaxies; The Milky Way, Triangulum Galaxy, and the Andromeda
Galaxy, located 2.7 million light-years from the Milky Way Galaxy. Ships travel from one end of the Commonwealth to the other
through slipstreams, following pre-guided roller coaster-like pathways through the cosmos to and from their destination.
The Commonwealth claims to be a utopian society, but it is actually in a state of war with the Magog, a humanoid species
with bat-like faces that are dedicated to war. A few years earlier, to show good faith as a result of peace talks, the Commonwealth
ceded to the Magog a key home world. This home world is a key planet of one of the Commonwealth's member species, the genetically
engineered Nietzscheans. The Nietzscheans, displeased with this peace agreement with the Magog, secretly attempt to usurp
control of the Commonwealth. This is also the embodiment of their basic beliefs, as they see themselves as the race described
as the "Übermensch" by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
The Commonwealth is defended by the High Guard, an armada of many ships. The protagonist of the series, Dylan Hunt, is
the captain of a Commonwealth ship, the Andromeda Ascendant. The ship's computer, a powerful AI (Artificial Intelligence),
is a key character in the series.
The entire High Guard, including Captain Hunt, is caught by surprise in the first engagement of the Nietzschean uprising.
He is forced to evacuate his crew, but Andromeda gets caught on the edge of an event horizon of a black hole, freezing him
in time.
Conceived in 1991 shortly before Gene Roddenberry's death, DS9 centers on the formerly Cardassian space station Terok Nor.
After the Bajorans have liberated themselves from the long and brutal Cardassian Occupation, the United Federation of Planets
is invited by the Bajoran Provisional Government to administer joint control of the station, which initially orbits Bajor.
The station is renamed Deep Space Nine.
According to co-creator Berman, he and Piller had considered setting the new series on a colony planet, but they felt
a space station would both appeal more to viewers and save money that would be required for on-location shooting for a "land-based"
show. However, they were certain they did not want the show to be set aboard a starship because Star Trek: The Next Generation
was still in production at the time and, in Berman’s words, it "just seemed ridiculous to have two shows—two
casts of characters—that were off going where no man has gone before."[1]
In the pilot, the station is moved near the mouth of the newly discovered Bajoran wormhole, allowing access to the distant,
unexplored Gamma Quadrant. It quickly becomes a center for exploration, interstellar trade, political maneuvering, and eventually
open conflict.
While its predecessors tended to restore the status quo ante at the end of each episode, allowing out-of-order viewing,
DS9 contains story arcs that span shows—or seasons—and one installment often builds upon those that aired
earlier, with several having cliffhanger endings. Michael Piller believed this to be one of the series' best qualities, allowing
repercussions of past episodes to influence future events and remain with the show, forcing characters to "learn that
actions have consequences".[1] This trend was especially noticeable toward the series' finale, by which time the show
was scripted—intentionally—very much as a serial.[1][2]
Unlike in Star Trek: The Next Generation, interpersonal conflicts were featured prominently in DS9. This was at the suggestion
of Star Trek: The Next Generation's writers (many of whom also wrote for DS9) because they felt that the prohibition limited
their ability to develop interesting stories. In Piller's words, "people who come from different places—honorable,
noble people—will naturally have conflicts"
Futurama is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David
X. Cohen for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series follows the adventures of a late-20th-century New York City pizza delivery
boy, Philip J. Fry, who, after being unwittingly cryogenically frozen for one thousand years, finds employment at Planet Express,
an interplanetary delivery company in the retro-futuristic 31st century. The series was envisioned by Groening in the late
1990s while working on The Simpsons, later bringing Cohen aboard to develop storylines and characters to pitch the show to
Fox.
In the United States, the series aired on Fox from March 28, 1999, to August 10, 2003, before ceasing production. Futurama
was then aired in reruns on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim from 2003 to 2007, until the network's contract expired. It was revived

with 20th Century Fox Television to syndicate the existing episodes and air the films as 16 new, half-hour episodes, constituting
a fifth season.[1][2]
In June 2009, producing studio 20th Century Fox announced that Comedy Central had picked up the show for 26 new half-hour
episodes, which began airing in 2010 and 2011.[3][4] The show was renewed for a seventh season, with the first half airing
in June 2012 and the second set for early summer 2013.[5][6] It was later revealed that the seventh season would be the final
season, as Comedy Central announced that they would not be commissioning any further episodes. The series finale aired on
September 4, 2013.[7] Though Groening first said he will try to get it picked up by another network,[8] David X. Cohen finally
confirmed that the episode "Meanwhile" would be the last episode of season 7 and also the series finale.[9]
Throughout its run, Futurama has received critical acclaim. The show has been nominated for 17 Annie Awards and 12 Emmy
Awards, winning seven of the former and six of the latter. It has also been nominated four times for a Writers Guild of America
Award, winning two for the episodes "Godfellas" and "The Prisoner of Benda", been nominated for a Nebula
Award and has received Environmental Media Awards for episodes "The Problem with Popplers" and "The Futurama
Holiday Spectacular".[10] Futurama-related merchandise has also been released, including a tie-in comic book series and

During 2258, Commander Jeffrey Sinclair is in charge of the station. Much of the story revolves around his gradual discovery
that it was his capture by the Minbari at the Battle of the Line which ended the war against Earth. Upon capturing Sinclair,
the Minbari came to believe that Valen, a great Minbari leader and hero of the last Minbari-Shadow war, had been reincarnated
as the Commander. Concluding that others of their species had been, and were continuing to be reborn as humans, and in obedience
to the edict that Minbari do not kill one another, lest they harm the soul, they stopped the war just as Earth's final defenses
were on the verge of collapse.
Meanwhile, tensions between the Centauri Republic, which is an empire in decline, and the Narn Regime, a former dominion
which rebelled and gained freedom, are increasing. Ambassador G'Kar of the Narn wishes for his people to strike back at the
Centauri for what they did, and Ambassador Londo Mollari of the Centauri wishes for his people to become again the great empire
they once were. As part of these struggles, Mollari makes a deal with a mysterious ally to strike back at the Narn, further
heightening tensions.
It is gradually revealed that Ambassador Delenn is a member of the mysterious and powerful Grey Council, the ruling body
of the Minbari. Towards the end of 2258, she begins the transformation into a Minbari-human hybrid, ostensibly to build a
bridge between the humans and Minbari. The year ends with the death of Earth Alliance president Luis Santiago. The death is
officially ruled an accident, but some members of the military, including the staff of Babylon 5, believe it to be an assassination.
The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball
is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery
of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are
only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young
cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl
crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile,
Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one
of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold. But don't worry,
there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry
finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another
Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater
challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most
thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for
kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean
considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen
time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan
Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore,
still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a
small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. Kim

they might even fit a bit bigger. How they work, the leg is made to hug your calf, so even if your foot is much smaller than
a men's size 12, they should hang on. (Not kids. But adults. We put our tiniest Merchant Assistant into a pair, and she stomped
around just fine. And sounded HUGE.) That also means that the circumference of your calf is likely to be the limiting factor.
Measure 10" above the sole of your foot. If it's more than 15" around, these are probably not going to fit. If there's

Starhunter follows the exploits of the crew of a retired luxury-liner refitted to serve a late-23rd century bounty-hunting
crew, led by Dante Montana (Paré). The owning company's name "Trans-Utopia Cruiseship HHS", was painted on her side
but has faded, leaving some letters readable while obliterating others. The letters that remain have become her nickname,
so she is casually known as "Trans Utopian" or "Tulip".
In the first season, Tulip is owned by Rudolpho deLuna, who has hired Dante Montana as a bounty hunter. Dante took the
job to provide a means of traveling, while also financing the search for his son, Travis, who was abducted a decade prior
by a group of brigands, called Raiders. Aiding him are the ship's engineer, Percy Montana (Dante's niece) and security officer
Lucrecia Scott, a former marine, added to the crew by deLuna to keep Dante focused on the missions given him. However, Lucrecia
also has a hidden agenda, and is actually an operative for a mysterious organization called "The Orchard", a group
of scientists and researchers dedicated to unlocking, and later controlling, a group of alien genes called "The Divinity
Cluster".
Firefly the TV Series
The show takes its name from the "Firefly-class" spaceship, Serenity, that the central characters call home.
It resembles a firefly in general arrangement, and the tail section, analogous to a bioluminescent insectoid abdomen, lights
up during acceleration. The ship was named after the Battle of Serenity Valley, where Mal and Zoe were on the losing side.
It is revealed in "Bushwhacked" that the Battle of Serenity Valley is widely considered the loss which sealed the
fate of the Independents.
Throughout the series, the Alliance is shown to govern the star system through an organization of "core" planets,
following its success in forcibly unifying all the colonies under a single government. DVD commentary suggests that the Alliance
is composed of two primary "core" systems, one predominantly Western in culture, the other pan-Asian, justifying
the mixed linguistic and visual themes of the series. The central planets are firmly under Alliance control, but the outlying
planets and moons resemble the 19th-century American West, with little governmental authority. Settlers and refugees on the
outlying worlds have relative freedom from the central government, but lack the amenities of the high-tech civilization that
exists on the inner worlds. In addition, the outlying areas of space ("the black") are inhabited by the Reavers,
a cannibalistic group of nomadic humans that have become savage and animalistic
The series takes place in the year 2517, on a variety of planets and moons. The TV series does not reveal whether these
celestial bodies are within one star system, only saying that Serenity's mode of propulsion is a "gravity-drive".
The film Serenity makes clear that all the planets and moons are in one large system, and production documents related to
the film indicate that there is no faster-than-light travel in this universe. The characters occasionally refer to "Earth-that-was",
and the film establishes that, long before the events in the series, a large population had emigrated from Earth to a new
star system in generation ships:[9] "Earth-that-was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many". The emigrants
established themselves in this new star system, with "dozens of planets and hundreds of moons". Many of these were
terraformed, a process in which a planet or moon is altered to resemble Earth. The terraforming process was only the first
step in making a planet habitable, however, and the outlying settlements often did not receive any further support in the
construction of their civilizations. This resulted in many of the border planets and moons having forbidding, dry environments,
well-suited to the Western genre.

Farscape features a diverse ensemble of characters who are initially escaping from corrupt authorities in the form of a militaristic
organisation called the Peacekeepers. The protagonists live inside a large bio-mechanical ship called Moya, which is a living
entity. In the first episode, they are joined by the main character, John Crichton (Ben Browder), a modern-day American astronaut
who accidentally flew into the entrance of a wormhole near Earth during an experimental space flight. On the same day, another
stranger is picked up by Moya: a stranded Peacekeeper named Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black). Despite his best intentions, John does
make a few major enemies; the primary of these is known as Scorpius. There are a few stand-alone plots, but the show gradually
unfolds progressive arcs beginning with their recapture by the Peacekeepers, followed by John’s search to find another
wormhole back to Earth, and an eventual arms race for weaponized wormhole technology. Secondary arcs explore the way in which
the characters change due to their influences and adventures together, most notably John over his obsession with wormhole
technology, his relationship with Aeryn and the neural clone of Scorpius that haunts him in his brain.
